ING Marnix

The iconic ING Marnix building in Brussels, recognised as a modernist masterpiece and listed on the Brussels heritage inventory since 2021, has undergone a major transformation. 

The renovation aimed to turn this architectural landmark into a sustainable, comfortable and futureproof workspace, both technically and socially.

Beddeleem’s contribution

Within the office floors, Beddeleem was responsible for the production, delivery and installation of:

• 3,500 m² JB PURE 100 - entirely custom-designed to meet the aesthetic and functional requirements of the architect and client, including bespoke top and bottom skirting
• 5,600 m² JB 2000 including custom acoustic textile finishes (JB ABSORB) and specially engineered integrated ventilation systems
• JB DOOR systems with enhanced acoustic and fire-safety specifications

In addition to the office floors, the ING bank branch on the ground floor was equipped with a series of interconnected JB QBE modular units, providing acoustically isolated customer and consultation spaces within the open space.

A renovation focused on sustainability and performance

The project sets new benchmarks in energy efficiency and environmental responsibility:

• CO₂ emissions reduced by approx. 76% compared to 2019
• BREEAM Outstanding (Interim) certification, the highest level within the BREEAM framework
• Ongoing ambition to achieve WELL Platinum for health and well-being

Key sustainable interventions include:

• A largely green roof with integrated solar panels
• New façades, triple-glazed windows, improved insulation and airtightness
• ± 200 m³ of underground rainwater harvesting for landscaping and sanitary use
• Extensive material reuse and low-impact material selection, such as recycled carpet tiles

Preserving architectural identity

The architectural design was led by A2M and Moreno Architecture, who succeeded in strengthening the original modernist character while integrating today’s standards for sustainability and employee well-being.

Beyond technical upgrades, the renovation celebrates the original vision of architect Gordon Bunshaft: openness, transparency, integrated art and fluid spatial experiences. The project combines heritage preservation with contemporary design, resulting in a building that is both historically respectful and operationally modern.

A new workplace philosophy

The renewed ING Marnix building fully embraces hybrid working. It features focus zones, collaboration areas, meeting spaces and informal hubs, all with strong attention to daylight, comfort and well-being.

With over 45,000 m², around 1,286 windows and thousands of daily users, the project demonstrates how large-scale renovation can lead to a healthier, more productive and sustainable working environment.
